In a world of iBeacon and the ‘internet of things’ era, it is easy to get lost in the thousands of potential applications of proximity technology.  The sky really is the limit for iBeacon app developers to devise innovative ways of utilizing the technology as a means of interacting with mobile users in new ways based on their location.  Most of the news has been rampant with companies utilizing the new technology to send customer greetings or offers as they visit retail locations.  Although highly valuable, and if done right highly rewarding for customers, little has been written about the far more meaningful uses of proximity tech, those that work to improve the customer experience beyond discounts and coupons.

Apple CarPlay & the Smart Automotive

Mobile technology has been seeping its way into the auto industry for a few years now with Bluetooth enabled wireless music streaming and hands-free phone calls in conjunction with our handy mobile devices.  However, the mobile capabilities in our cars will see a huge advance in the next year with the addition of new smart systems like Apple CarPlay and Google Projected Mode about to roll out in large scale within new cars.  In addition, Apple has recently announced it partnerships with Pioneer Electronics and Alpine in an effort to integrate CarPlay into aftermarket systems, allowing consumers the ability to acquire the technology without having to shell out for a new car.

Disney recently released news of its MagicBands, marking a new era of city attractions utilizing wireless technology to improve visitor experiences. The MagicBand changes the entire Disney experience at their Disney World Parks, from paying for tickets and merchandise, to photo collection and fast pass utilization. A simple touch of the MagicBand on your wrist will allow you to enter the park, fast-pass rides, pay for merchandise, unlock your hotel room, and more. It’s the start of what will likely become a staple for worldwide attractions.
